CAREER CHANGE: Bushey woman follows her dream of becoming a postnatal doula

Published on: 13th April 2021   |   By: Lizzie Ellis   |   Category: Uncategorized

A 49-year-old woman from Bushey has decided to use lockdown as an opportunity to follow her lifelong dream to become a postnatal doula, supporting new mothers.

Emma Duke-Cohan, who lives in Bushey Heath with her husband and 15-year-old twins, completed her training during the pandemic and has set up her own business, Cocoon Postnatal Doula Services.

Emma said: “Babies are the most precious things but as any new parent knows, they can be exhausting even more so when there is a global pandemic thrown in the mix! This is where a postnatal doula can help.

“I always feel extremely privileged to enter someone’s home when they are at their most vulnerable. My role is to support not only mum but the whole family, to help them acclimatise to this life-changing experience. There are so many emotions swirling around at this time – love, excitement, joy, often mixed with exhaustion, anxiety and trepidation.

“Think of me as an extra pair of hands, a trustworthy ally, once you are home with your precious baby, starting this new chapter as a family. I am here to provide non-judgemental support, listen to your concerns, offer reassurance, assist with feeding, ensure you rest and take care of yourself and help you to be the best mother you can be to your newborn.”
