Police found disconcerting results during a vehicle safety operation last month.
Officers from the Watford Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) roamed five Watford streets on Tuesday, November 7, checking the handles of more than 100 vehicles to see if they were locked overnight.
The team located and informed the nine different owners of vehicles that had been left unlocked, with the public response described to be “overwhelmingly positive” for the warning.
This comes after increased focus on vehicle crime, with 42 vehicle break-ins in Watford reported over a three-week stretch in October.
Inspector Dan Jones, who leads the Watford Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “Earlier this year, several arrests were made in connection with vehicle crime in Watford, with some resulting in charges. In some of these cases, we were able to make those arrests swiftly thanks to the public calling us immediately when they suspected a crime was being committed.
“We continue to urge residents to report any suspicious activity, such as people trespassing on driveways or interfering with vehicles, to us immediately on 999, as this allows us the best chance of making an arrest when the crime is in action.”
