A top-ranked independent school in Bushey will close its doors this summer after 36 years.
Plans to close Immanuel College on Elstree Road, Bushey, were confirmed on April 14.
The co-educational Jewish day school, which ranks highly in national guides, has faced increasing strain on resources in recent years.
In a letter sent to parents, chair of governors Daniel Levy described the announcement as “an incredibly difficult and painful moment”.
He added: “The focus now is on supporting our pupils, families and staff through this transition with compassion, clarity and integrity. We are committed to ensuring that every pupil is guided to the right next step.”
The letter also said governors had explored “every possible avenue” to keep the school open but were left with “no other viable alternative but to consult with staff about closure in August 2026”.
It stated that changes in the education landscape, including the introduction of VAT on independent school fees and growth in local state Jewish provision, had reduced demand.
