Staff at a popular tea room in Radlett served 300 free meals to hungry customers in celebration of its 30th anniversary.
According to general manager Andrew Haworth, doors to The Bull Pen at Battlers Green Farm opened at 8.30am on November 6 to a small queue already gathered outside.
Andrew said: “The restaurant was full by 8.45am or 9am. For the rest of the morning, we had to stagger customers coming in. We ran out of meals to give away at about 1pm.”
Asked how the team came up with the idea of staging a free meal giveaway, Andrew explained: “We were wondering what we could do to give back to the community on our anniversary day.
“We considered a 30 per cent discount on the day but in the end, we landed on free meals. I know it’s a bit unheard of for a restaurant to do something like this, but we really wanted the day to be special.
“Most of the people who came knew we were doing a free giveaway, but a few people turned up expecting it to be a normal day. I think they were probably the most chuffed of all!”
Various customers took to social media to express their gratitude and fond memories of the restaurant.
One said: “We were treated to a lovely breakfast and cup of coffee. I have been going to the Bull Pen for 27 years!”
Another said: “We took visiting relatives for lunch; got a super surprise when we were told it was totally free! Wishing The Bull Pen another fabulous, successful 30 years.”
