Members of the 8th Rickmansworth Brownies had a fabulous time making DIY bird boxes at Woodoaks Farm last month.
According to Brownie leader Hazel Carmichael, a handful of the girls were initially nervous to pick up the screwdrivers and drills. However, by the end of the session, each had created their own bird box under the expert guidance of Woodoaks’ volunteers.
Hazel explained: “This term, we are learning about skills for the future. We’ve tried some fun science experiments, cooked a basic pasta sauce, and we also wanted the girls to use tools they might need for DIY projects when they’re older.
“It was a really empowering workshop for the girls, and the parents who stayed on to watch were equally as amazed as the volunteers!”
Even though waiting lists for the Brownies are longer than ever, a lack of volunteers increasingly imperils the community initiative. Find out how you can get involved with volunteering by emailing southwestdivision@girlguidinghertfordshire.org.uk
