BRILLIANT BOCCIA: Talented athlete from Pinner competes in world boccia championships

A boccia player from Pinner narrowly missed out on a medal on the world stage.

Reshad Saraj was one of four players selected to represent Great Britain at the World Boccia Challenger (WBC) championships in Olbia, Italy.

Boccia is played from a seated position, with players propelling balls to land as close as possible to a white marker ball, known as the Jack.

The sport has been part of the Paralympics since 1984, with competitors taking part as individuals, pairs or as a team.

This year’s WBC event took place from September 29 to October 6. Reshad was looking to add to his world medal collection, having won bronze in 2022 and an international individual gold in Lahti in May.

However, it was not to be as he finished fourth after losing a third-place match against fellow Brit Tomas Martin.

Speaking earlier in the year ahead, Reshad said: “I want to be an open athlete; I want to become a sponge and soak up ideas and try them. Not every idea will work.

“If it doesn’t, we can go back and maybe implement a different approach, or maybe just tweak it slightly until it’s beneficial for everyone. I really can’t wait to get started and keep learning.”

Liz Fisher, head of performance pathway for Boccia UK, said: “Our talent transition squad have really demonstrated this year that they can be highly competitive at WBC events, which are a brilliant stepping stone to the World Cup level of competition.”
