Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue have responded to a fire in residential high-rise building on Maylands Avenue, Hemel Hempstead today  (Tuesday January 21).

Mark Barber, Deputy Chief Fire Officer at Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “At just before 1pm this afternoon, Fire Control received several calls to a fire on the first floor of a residential high-rise building in Maylands Avenue, Hemel Hempstead.

“Fire Control immediately despatched our standard response of eight fire engines from Hemel Hempstead and surrounding station areas.

“The first crew was mobilised within 28 seconds and arrived on the scene within seven minutes.

“On arrival, firefighters confirmed that the fire was in a flat on the first floor of the building, with heavy smoke spreading through the corridors.

“Firefighting teams quickly entered the building, located and extinguished the fire which was contained within the bedroom of the flat.

“The occupant of the flat, who had left the building prior to the crews’ arrival, was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation before being taken to hospital for further precautionary checks.

“Throughout the incident, Fire Control operators stayed in contact with the other residents providing reassurance and safety advice until the fire was confirmed as fully extinguished.

“Fire crews on scene worked extremely hard in challenging conditions and thanks to their rapid response, the fire was contained to the room where it started. Their actions prevented the fire from spreading to other areas of the building and limited damage where possible.

“The cause of the fire is yet to be established and a full investigation will be carried out later today.

“Local crews will visit people in the area to offer reassurance and home fire safety visits, with a focus on what actions to take in the event of a fire.”
