BRAVE STEPS: Garston teacher takes on marathon to raise funds for children’s charity

A Garston resident is preparing to run the London Marathon to raise money for Starlight Children’s Foundation, a charity supporting ill children.

Having worked as a teacher for 13 years, Teresa Kite found that children learn through play and exploration, particularly in their younger years. Recognising that not all children have the opportunity to play, she chose to support Starlight.

The national charity sends play therapists into hospitals, ensuring all children can experience the power of play to boost their wellbeing during illness.

Teresa, who now works at West Herts College, shared her story with GARSTONnews.

She said: “I have never run more than 5km, but when I saw videos of people running the marathon last year, I just got emotional. I signed up that evening.

“I lost my dad in October last year, a week before my birthday. I found that training for the marathon really helped me. Grief takes over, but running really helped me focus – I’d come back after a run, and I feel like I was prepared for the day.

“My dad knew I had entered the marathon, so I feel like I’m getting closer to him every time I run.”

Teresa’s father would have celebrated his 60th birthday the week before the race, which takes place on Sunday, April 27, so her family and friends will be holding birthday balloons on the sidelines.

Teresa added: “I know my dad will be with me every step of the way.”

Her fundraising efforts include an Easter Family Fun Day, held at The Red Lion in Apsley on Saturday, April 12, between 12pm and 4pm. Thanks to the local community’s support, it will feature a BBQ and bar, inflatables, local craft stalls, a children’s DJ, and special guests.
