Residents are being asked to think twice before finding shade underneath trees, after large branches suddenly fell in Hatch End and Pinner.
Large branches were reported to have come down in parks across Pinner, Stanmore and Hatch End.
After the branches fell, Harrow Council issued safety warnings and explained that the incidents happened due to Sudden Branch Drop Syndrome. This occurs when one or more branches suddenly breaks off from a tree that appears to be healthy.
Signs from the council have now been placed in local parks and green spaces to encourage the public to be aware of this issue.
The signs also warn: “Residents are advised to avoid sitting, playing or congregating under any large trees.”
The council shared that regular inspections of park trees and highway trees are carried out by qualified arboriculturists (tree officers) as part of their commitment to public safety.
While no one was injured in the north London parks, on Saturday, June 28, seven-year-old Leonna Ruka died after a tree collapsed on her at Chalkwell Park in Essex.
