A Northwood school celebrated the opening of its new cricket pavilion with a visit from an England cricketing legend.

Legendary former England captain Sir Andrew Strauss OBE visited Merchant Taylors’ School (MTS) on Wednesday, April 17, to officially unveil the new five-lane Julian Hill Cricket Centre.

This new indoor facility is set to have a major impact on the sport locally, and will also act as the training base for Middlesex County Cricket Club (MCCC). Students from the school will be able to train at the centre, and the school is hoping to host a variety of international touring sides.

The region’s women’s team, the Sunrisers, and 17 local cricket clubs also regularly use MTS facilities.

Sir Andrew said at the event: “This new indoor training centre is an outstanding facility and will provide young cricketers with the opportunity to train year-round and hone their skills for success on the pitch.”

Andrew Cornish, CEO of MCCC, added: “On our first day of training, one of our extremely experienced international opening batsmen declared it the best artificial surface he had ever trained on.”

Named in recognition of MTS alumnus and keen cricket fan Julian Hill, who donated £1million towards the project, the centre has the most advanced playing surface and lighting available.

Any schools and clubs wishing to book the facility should email or call 01923 845550.
