A coach at Harperbury Bowls Club (HBC) has been named Bowls England Coach of the Year.
Jan Taylor, a coach and former teacher at the Radlett and Shenley-based club, won the award at the ceremony in Leicester on Saturday, February 22. She was recognised for her kind, approachable and patient coaching style.
She told RADLETTnews: “I’m surprised. It was a good evening, and I appreciate the fact it’s a bigger deal than I thought.
“Getting people started in the sport is important. Many will have coached at a higher level, but without a start, you’ll never reach that level.”
Jan’s recent win is one of many exciting things to have happened at the club. Currently, HBC are in the process of upgrading their clubhouse, which Jan said will look completely different.
She said: “In the winter, it was very cold. [The improvements] allowed us to be much better insulated. We have groups that come to the club for a warm space and social activity. That will get us through the winter.”
The project was funded thanks to £15,000 from Sport England’s Movement Fund. With 2025 marking the club’s 70th anniversary year and the new bowls season set to begin on Sunday, April 13, it’s an exciting time for HBC.
Jan added: “It’s a big year for us with lots of events. There’s a lot involved in these big events, so we’ll be pretty busy.”
