BIG BOYS: Hit sitcom inspired by Rickmansworth life set to return for second series

The hit Channel 4 sitcom Big Boys, which is created by Rickmansworth-born comedian Jack Rooke and based on his own life, is set to return for a second series.

The show stars Derry Girls actor Dylan Llewellyn as Jack, and follows his experiences as he goes to university, struggles to come out to his mum and come to terms with the death of his dad.

It also stars Jon Ponting as mature student and Jack’s newfound best friend Danny, with the show described by its creator as a “thank you” to straight best friends to queer people.

The show included several scenes that were filmed in Mill End and nearby Watford, reflecting Jack’s childhood.

Arriving on Channel 4’s streaming service All4 on May 26, the show was a hit with critics and audiences, with The Guardian calling it a “genuinely uplifting and witty sitcom” and the Radio Times stating that its “warm, chock-full of personality and very funny”.

Reacting to the renewal, Mr Rooke said: “The response to Big Boys series 1 has been so phenomenally kind, heartwarming and beyond anything any of us could have hoped for, the fact we got onto Gogglebox is probably the proudest moment of mine and my mum’s lives (she got over 100 likes on Facebook for it!)

“And so, after a huge spitroast at Harvester, I decided I probably do have some more embarrassing stories about me & my mates to mine for comic material so get ready for an even more cringe second year at Brent University.”
