A class of Berkhamsted schoolboys have gone viral after filming a rap battle spoken entirely in Mandarin.
The video sees a group of Year 7 Berkhamsted School pupils in a circle in the classroom, rapping phrases such as, “What does your dad like to eat?” with responses like, “My dad likes to eat rice!” in Mandarin. After each phrase, the crowd of boys roar and yell in faux outrage over what was said.
The video was posted on the Berkhamsted Boys Instagram page with subtitles.
The post said: “Who’d have thought that they’ve only been learning Mandarin for 10 months? Some of them started off a little nervous, but the cheering from their classmates really helped to build their confidence.”
The video has more than three million views and hundreds of thousands of likes. The rap battle also made its way to TikTok, where it has gathered a similar number of views.
One viewer commented: “Maybe if I was taught like this, I wouldn’t have stopped learning.”
A spokesperson for Berkhamsted School said: “It’s with thanks to our Mandarin teacher for making the lessons and learning so much fun. It has been incredible to see the support and positive response from many online, showing that when you create a fun and encouraging environment for children to learn, they thrive.”
