BEHIND BARS: Man jailed following series of crimes across Hertfordshire

Published on: 22nd July 2025   |   By: Nik Allen   |   Category: Uncategorized

A criminal whose offending spanned across three districts in Hertfordshire has been jailed for two-and-a-half years.

Paul Hayward,  46, of Stanley Gardens, Borehamwood, appeared at St Albans Crown Court for sentencing after previously pleading guilty to the following crimes:

  • Aggravated vehicle taking (relating to a BMW on Dales Road, Borehamwood, on March 18, 2025)
  • Theft of a BMW and Playstation console from an address in Dales Road, Borehamwood (March 18, 2025)
  • Burglary at Co-op on Delta Gain, Carpenders Park (March 16, 2025), where a large quantity of cigarettes were stolen.
  • Burglary at Co-op on Watford Road, Rickmansworth (March 17, 2025) where a large quantity of cigarettes were stolen.
  • Battery against a member of staff in Boots chemist on the Roaring Meg Retail Park, Stevenage (February 20, 2025)
  • Dangerous driving, driving without insurance, driving otherwise in accordance with a licence and possession of cannabis in Edgware (April 17, 2024)

In addition to the custodial sentence handed down on Wednesday, July 9, he was also disqualified from driving for 39 months.

Hayward was previously charged with attempted robbery and possession of an offensive weapon (knuckle duster) in connection with this case, but the judge ordered these remaining offences to lie on file.

This means when the defendant has already pleaded guilty to more serious offences, and prosecution for the remaining offences would not significantly increase their custodial sentence. However, if the defendant is convicted for further offences in the future, the charges on file can be used in a subsequent prosecution case.

Hayward’s co-defendant received a suspended sentence for his part in the crime spree.

Liam Lincoln, 22, of Hartforde Road, Borehamwood, was handed eight months suspended for 18 months, with the conditions that he carry out 40 days rehabilitation and 150 hours of unpaid work. He previously pleaded guilty to the following:

  • Burglary at Co-op on Delta Gain, Carpenders Park (March 16, 2025)
  • Burglary at Co-op on Watford Road, Rickmansworth (March 17, 2025)
  • Theft on Dales Road, Borehamwood (March 18, 2025)

Investigator Chloe Harding, from the Hertsmere Local Crime Unit, said: “Hayward has shown a flagrant disregard for the law, which is plain to see when looking at the list of offences he was charged with. We are pleased to have achieved a custodial sentence, and we hope that Hayward’s victims are able to move forward with their lives now that he is behind bars.”
