A man who told police he was only a “getaway driver” has been jailed for two years and eight months after stealing £100,000 worth of sentimental jewellery and cash from a Bushey home.
On Friday, June 7, 2023, an occupant of a first-floor flat came home to discover a safe containing high-value jewellery, watches and cash had been smashed out the wall and stolen. More items were also taken from a second bedroom.
An investigation was subsequently launched by the Hertsmere Local Crime Unit, during which Saunders was identified as a suspect.
Forensic DNA was found in the communal hallway of the building and cell site data also places his mobile phone in the area at the time of the incident.
During a hearing in December, Saunders stated he only ever intended to be the “getaway driver” but ended up helping to carry the safe.
After pleading guilty, Saunders was sentenced at St Albans Crown Court on Friday, January 24.
Detective Constable Jay Jeffrey, from the Hertsmere Local Crime Unit, said: “I hope the fact that Saunders is behind bars brings some small comfort to the victims.”
