BEAUTIFUL & POIGNANT: Historic Market Hall in Amersham draped in poppies for Remembrance Day

Published on: 8th November 2024   |   By: Nik Allen   |   Category: Uncategorized

A poppy veil, consisting of 3,200 bright red flowers, has been installed at Amersham’s Market Hall for Armistice Day.

The project was led by Michelle Jackson, The Beacon School’s head of art, with contributions from every pupil.

Michelle, speaking to AMERSHAMnews, said: “Each pupil made their poppy by cutting the shape out of felt and then attaching it to the net to create the collaborative veil.

“The veil has been draped over Market Hall as a poignant and beautiful way to commemorate Remembrance Day.

“The piece was inspired by the collaborative installation at the Tower of London in 2014.”

Residents took the Facebook to comment on the stunning artwork at Market Hall.

One said: “It’s truly a beautiful and poignant way to capture the solemnity of Remembrance Sunday.”

Another added: “It’s wonderful – well done everyone involved.”

The poppies were not the only Remembrance activity undertaken by The Beacon School, with Year 8 students taking a trip to see the battlefields of the First World War at the end of October.

This year is particularly important for Remembrance, as 2024 marks the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings, which helped turn the tide of the Second World War in the Allies’ favour.
