BATTERY STORAGE: Proposal for huge site adjoining Elstree Substation to be submitted

A planning application for a battery storage facility to be built on Green Belt land near Letchmore Heath is due to be submitted to Hertsmere Council this autumn.

A leaflet was circulated amongst Letchmore residents directing them to the website of the proposed facility, to be known as the Elstree Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).

Residents were invited to leave thoughts and comments on the website before September 15.

The proposed site would likely constitute the largest BESS in the country, with 400 batteries stored in a 3m x 6m storage unit apiece. Although developers are unable to provide solid figures yet, the total cost is likely to amass around £1bn.

In response, Cllr Caroline Clapper told RadlettNews: “Our Green Belt is not the appropriate location for any industrial scale development like this, not to mention that it’s a huge fire risk.

“I will be objecting to the proposal in the strongest possible terms and I would urge the entire community to rally and do the same,” she stated.

According to Chiltern Green Energy, who proposed the project: “BESS technology is forming an important part of the country’s efforts to achieve the Government’s target of net zero CO2 emissions by 2050.

“The Elstree BESS will enable renewable energy, that might otherwise be wasted due to insufficient grid capacity, to be stored in batteries within containers at the site, and then supplied to the grid as and when required.

“The location directly adjoining the existing substation enables this to be done in the most efficient manner.”

The project is not connected with the nearby Solar Farm proposal, nor does it affect Aldenham Estate land.

Radlett Village Institute will be holding a Q&A on Tuesday, October 10, where residents can find out more.
