Shoppers were evacuated from Atria Watford after reports of a basement fire this morning (March 4)
Alarms were sounded and several shops and doors closed their shutters whilst firefighters attended the scene.
A spokesperson for Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service was called at 8.53am this morning to reports of a fire in the basement of the Atria shopping centre in Watford. Three fire engines, from Watford and Garston fire stations, were sent to the scene, where crews located a fire in a trash compactor. Firefighters worked to prevent the fire from spreading while they removed a storage container from the compactor to get access to the fire, which they were then able to extinguish. The fire was out by 11am, and firefighters used portable ventilation fans to clear smoke from the building. The fire is believed to have started accidentally.”
