Two boys at a Northwood school have recently claimed the top two places in a prestigious design competition.
Azlan Latif and Samay Kachalia, both pupils at the independent Merchant Taylors School, came first and second in a contest organised by University College London and construction firm Mace.
The challenge for these two bright young designers was to use computer-aided design software to create a design idea for a new community centre, whilst also following a brief set out by Mace. This competition was sent out to the entire lower school for them to enter.
The brief asked students to create a centre with a welcoming and accessible environment, and that would be able to accommodate four multi-use rooms, an employee office and toilets.
The judges, made up of members of Mace’s board and their design team, based their decision on criteria such as the design’s practicality and aesthetic, the sustainability, the innovation and creativity displayed, and the skills demonstrated by the entrant.
Both students did very well to earn their places in the top two of the whole competition.
