Plans have been submitted to build two new flats in the car park of a Rickmansworth pub.
The Western on Rickmansworth High Street would be retained, but the existing outbuilding would be demolished to make way for the erection of a two-storey detached building containing one one-bedroom flat and one two-bedroom flat.
The revised car park would contain six parking spaces, including one disabled parking space. The development itself is car-free and so no car parking spaces are provided.
The Western is not a listed building, however it does lie within the Rickmansworth Conservation Area, which is governed by strict planning controls to protect the character of the area.
Similar plans, submitted in February 2024, to demolish the outbuilding and construct a three-storey building containing three one-bed flats were refused. An appeal was submitted but this was dismissed.
In their decision notice, Three Rivers District Council described the former plans as “obtrusive, prominent and incongruous”, adding that “there are no public benefits which outweigh the harm to the Conservation Area”.
The planning application was validated on Monday, April 28, and is currently pending consideration from Three Rivers District Council.
The planning statement for the new plans notes that the owner of the pub, Punch Pubs, is supportive of the application.
