Police have reminded dog walkers at Bentley Priory Nature Reserve in Stanmore to be mindful of their pets when around the site’s famous longhorn cows.
One of the green space’s more unusual sights, the longhorn cows can normally only be found in the United States, but a herd of the majestic animals have been residing at the reserve for decades.
However, some dog owners have caused distress to these much-loved animals, with reports of unleashed pooches scaring the cattle and sometimes even attacking them.
Recently, the Stanmore Park Safer Neighbourhood Team conducted patrols in the reserve as part of an initiative to prevent violence against women and girls. They have since also been reminded of the impact aberrant dogs can have on the cows.
Posting on social media, the team stated: “Please be reminded to keep dogs on leads when around the longhorn cows. We have had previous incidents of dogs biting/chasing the cows.”
