Hertsmere Borough Council hosted a Disability Confident event on Friday, June 30, calling on local businesses to change their attitudes to hiring employees with disabilities.
The event was run in partnership with Welwyn Borough Council, The Department of Work and Pensions (DWP), Step2Skills and Watford Chamber of Commerce. A total of 104 businesses enjoyed talks from a panel of experts including David Clarke, CEO of the British Paralympic Association.
Councillor Christian Gray, portfolio holder for communities, neighbourhoods, enforcement, economic development and transformation, said: “The purpose of the event was to dispel myths surrounding employing people from our disabled communities, encouraging businesses to talk about the opportunities and highlight the value of this under-tapped pool of talent.
“We will continue to work hard to help local businesses change their own behaviours and cultures, including being more open to hiring people with disabilities, as this not only helps our local disabled communities to thrive, but makes excellent business sense.”
