Hemel Hempstead-based boxing studio Mamba Gym recently welcomed teams from across the country for a thrilling battle of combat, agility and skill.

The club’s annual Winter Edition South Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) competition took place at Hemel Hempstead Leisure Centre on Sunday, January 14.

Competitors from across the UK came together to battle it out for medals in categories for children and adults of all abilities and belt colours.

Mamba BJJ, part of Mamba Gym in Hemel, took a team of 12 men and women to compete across multiple divisions. There were fantastic performances by all, notably Charlie Conibear, who won gold in his first competition back since recovering from a serious ankle injury, and Tom Batchelor, taking gold in the NoGi beginners division, winning four fights in a row in his first-ever competition.

All in all, Mamba BJJ ended up with five golds, nine silvers and one bronze medal, which gained them second place in the team ranking.

BJJ coach Rob Westney spoke to Hemel News and said: “What an amazing day for the team, the competitors and the club. We are also lucky to have such a big group of members who came down to give their support to the fighters and cheer them on. That’s representative of the team ethos at Mamba.

“I’m very proud to see the club go from strength to strength- to come second in a competition of this size, considering we are only one gym and have only been open for a couple of years.”
