A young basketball star from Hemel Hempstead has taken another step on his journey to greatness after winning a Jack Petchey Foundation Award.
Longdean School student Ricky Amrania, 16, has had stints with Hemel Storm and Hemel Sharks. He now plays at West Herts Warriors and is a Junior NBL player.
The sportsman was given a Jack Petchey Foundation Award for outstanding achievement and contribution to basketball by the Mayor of Brent, councillor Tariq Dar MBE, at an awards evening at Brent Civic Centre in February.
London Basketball Association CEO Tony Lazare and head community coach Lukas Cato nominated Ricky for the award. The young athlete’s recent achievements include being an active Basketball England Level 2 referee, playing for West Herts Warriors in the National Basketball League U16 Boys Eastern Premier, and representing Hertfordshire at county level for the past four years.
Ricky’s mum Priti said: “We are super proud of Ricky… [He] progressed rapidly, earning success in basketball through self-discipline, determination and hard work.
“He is not work shy and demonstrates a strong work ethic, self-motivation and a strong drive to improve himself when playing.”
Hertfordshire Basketball Association’s club secretary Steph Strachan said: “We have had the pleasure of knowing this young man for several years and Ricky is a great ambassador for the game.”
A spokesperson for Longdean School said: “A huge congratulations and an amazing achievement. We know there’s much more to come!”
