‘Uncle Peregrine’s Oyster Card to the Universe’ reads as something of a love-story to Rickmansworth, where local author Pat Maher has lived for the past five years. Inspired by Douglas Adams’ classic ‘Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’ which itself opens in a café in Rickmansworth, Maher’s novel follows the adventures of protagonist Charlie as he discovers something very strange in his uncle’s cellar.

RickyNews caught up with Pat to find out more about the novel and his hopes for its reception.

“I’ve always been a big fan of Douglas Adams,” laughed the author. “The novel is a cross between Hitchhiker’s Guide, Shaun of the Dead and the sci-fi comedy Red Dwarf. It’s quite light-hearted, but it’s filled with adventure and romance.”

Employed as the activities co-ordinator for a care home in Chorleywood, Pat spends his working day running poetry groups and drama clubs for elderly residents. “I’ve always been a creative person,” he shared. “I spent about 12 months writing the novel and then ended up self-publishing in the hope that with a few good reviews, a publishing house might take on my work.”

“Local response has been really positive so far,” Pat added. “A lot of the characters are based on real-life people in Rickmansworth. People like reading about places they recognise.”

‘Uncle Peregrine’s Oyster Card to the Universe’ is available for purchase on Amazon.
