PM RESIGNS: MP and Mayor divided over Keir Starmer’s resignation

Watford MP Matt Turmaine and Mayor Peter Taylor expressed contrasting views following Sir Keir Starmer’s announcement that he would resign as Prime Minister.

On the morning of June 22, Starmer addressed the public in a live speech, declaring he had spoken to the King and would resign from his position. The Labour MP said he came to the decision because his party wanted a change in leadership.

In light of the major change at 10 Downing Street, the town’s mayor slammed the 63-year-old’s term in charge.

Speaking to WatfordNews, the LibDem Mayor said: “Lots of us feel really let down by this Labour government, and in the end, Keir Starmer’s resignation was no great surprise. He never set out a clear vision of the kind of country he wanted us to be.

“After years of Conservative incompetence, many of us had hoped to see an improvement. Instead, this Labour government seemed to go from one mistake to the next.”

In comparison, the Labour Watford MP was too let down, but in a different manner.

Turmaine said: “I am disappointed that Keir felt he could no longer carry on, but I respect his decision. He worked extremely hard and has always put the country first.

“He rebuilt and turned the Labour Party around upon becoming leader in extremely difficult circumstances after its worst defeat since 1935 and led us to a stonking landslide victory in July 2024.”

In his leaving statement, Starmer said nominations to replace him would open on July 9 and close when Parliament breaks up for its summer recess, which is scheduled to begin July 16.
