Residents and staff at Friars Mead care home in Kings Langley, managed by the Abbeyfield Hertfordshire Residential Care Society, have celebrated a special milestone for their senior carer, Alexis Cook, who has just been working there for 20 years.

Alexis, who began working at the home in 2002, quickly rose through the ranks. She also came to love her work, and now says that “It’s like a second family to me, both the residents and staff”.

Friars Mead, a 27-bed home, have a handful of long serving members of staff and many of them remember the young teenage starting.

Care home secretary, Claire, said: “Staff have seen her through life’s ups and downs. We have been alongside Alexis and her many diets and fondly remember the birth of her son Leo, who has changed her life.

“Many residents have found great comfort and support in her friendly and lighthearted disposition.”

Alexis can turn her hand to anything from helping in the kitchen, organising the residents and loves sitting down to get crafty.

Resident, Sylvia, said: “I call her Wonder Woman! She is always there at the right time and has helped me no end. She produces foam cushions just at the right time to sooth sore tails and is a whizz with fixing our hearing aids!”

Alexis was presented with flowers, chocolates and a small gift from the residents on her anniversary, February 25, which she will put towards a holiday in the sun with Leo.
