“ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTED”: Mice roam free in St Albans pub as family sit to eat

A St Albans family were left “absolutely disgusted” after they were joined by two uninvited guests during their meal at Wetherspoons Waterend Barn.

Chloe Cruddas, alongside her father and children, was halfway through eating when she noticed the first of two rodents scuttling along.

Chloe said: “I looked down at my newborn in his car seat on the floor and noticed a mouse run from under the table.”

When the family told the manager, the response they got was that they were in an old building, that there was “nothing we can do” and “what do you expect?”.

Chloe said: “We went to get ready to leave and yet another mouse appeared right next to my newborn’s car seat.

“We feel physically sick and want to make people aware so they don’t get ill.

“We will never be eating there again!”

Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: “We are aware of a mouse sighting in the customer area at the Waterend Barn. We can confirm that this was an isolated incident, where a mouse had entered through a gap in the ventilation, which has since been filled.

“The pub was visited by an Environmental Health Officer, who said that they were satisfied that they had not found any signs of a mouse infestation. They were pleased to note that the pub’s pest contractors had already attended to set more bait trips and fill the gap in the ventilation.

“While it is unfortunate that the incident occurred, we are pleased to note that the measures appear to have been successful but will continue to be reviewed.

“Finally, the sighting is in no way a reflection of the pub, which was awarded the maximum food hygiene rating of 5 (out of 5) by the local authority and reflects excellent standards of cleanliness and hygiene in place.”
