Abbots gym members find out about closure controversially

Published on: 19th December 2018   |   By: Court Reporter   |   Category: Uncategorized

Members of an Abbots Langley gym were left disappointed by the way they found out about it closing.

Some members of The YMCA’s Woodlands Community Gym found out the gym was closing via a Facebook post from the leader of Three Rivers District Council, Councillor Sara Bedford, on December 6.

Her post on the Abbots Langley Matters group read: “The YMCA has decided to close its Woodlands Community Gym, in Leavesden Country Park, from December 31, 2018.

“The YMCA plan to convert the gym space to community rooms for local people to hire, catering for a variety of functions and events. They are working with class programme instructors to offer them opportunities to use our rooms and offer a similar, private programme to current class users. They have also been speaking to other local gyms to explore introductory rates to help current members make the transition to another site.

“Three Rivers have had no part in the decision making and we’re informed yesterday.”

Some members were upset to hear the news online instead of from The YMCA itself.

The YMCA sent out an email to members, on Friday, December 7, which addressed the news breaking on social media.

It said: “We understand that messages have already been posted on social media and regret that you did not hear this news directly from us first.

“We also regret that our charity can no longer run the community gym here and would like to take this opportunity to thank our customers for their support over many years.”

The rest of the email said: “Very regrettably, owing to increasing local competition and financial pressures we are forced to close Woodlands Community Gym on January 8, 2019.

“The outside courts and 3G pitches will remain open for hire, while the nursery, café and Cycle Hub will continue to operate as usual. Gym activities at Woodlands will continue until January 8, while our other gyms also remain open as usual.”

All multi-site memberships remain valid at The YMCA’s other facilities, allowing those members access to its Watford and St Albans branches as normal. If this no longer meets the member’s requirements, they can cancel their direct debit at the bank and the membership will conclude on December 31.
