MASSIVE WIN: St Albans beat Maidstone

Published on: 18th January 2020   |   By: News Desk   |   Category: St Albans City F.C

St Albans City’s picked up a massive three points at home to Maidstone United this afternoon after beating their opponents 1-0.

An own goal on 61 minutes was all that was needed for Ian Allinson’s men who have taken five points out of a possible nine in their last three games.

It was a lively start by Maidstone who were first to every ball and were passing the ball around nicely.

Maidstone continued to dominate with Saints’ forwards not having any clear cut chances in-front of goal.

The Saints should have broke the deadlock with the first big chance of the first half when Jefferson Louis scuffed his effort inside the six yard box which resulted in a goal kick. Massive chance.

It was a lively start to the second half with both sides increasing the tempo and matching eachother.

A great save from Dean Snedker kept it goalless with the visitors zipping the ball around well in the build up to the chance.

A big chance for the home side in the box but the ball failed to fall for a player.

60 seconds later and 61 minutes on the clock and the Saints got their breakthrough, with the ball hitting Maidstone’s Ross Marshall and ending up in Maidstone’s net. 1-0.

Maidstone started to push for a breakthrough and had a penalty shout turned down just three minutes after the opening goal.

Maidstone continued to push for an equaliser leaving space for the home side to take advantage of, which nearly paid off but Nwakuokei’s dink over the keeper lacked any real power to get it over the line.

It was a much deserved win for the home side who despite lacking any real clear cut chances, defended well and had some good spells of possession.

St Albans next play on Saturday, January 25 against Hampton & Richmond Borough.
