The Shenley Women’s Institute (WI) celebrated its centenary anniversary this June.
Guests at its celebration party on June 6 included Oliver Dowden MP and Joanna De Fries from Hertfordshire County Women’s Institutes.
Five current and past presidents also attended along with around 60 members, ranging in ages from mid 30s to late 90s.
Peg at 99 is the oldest Women’s Institute member in Hertfordshire.
Two of the current membership had relatives who were members back in 1919.
Members and guests then enjoyed a catered meal at tables beautifully decorated with flower arrangements in china teacups.
Oliver Dowden MP, gave a short extremely interesting and amusing talk about his life in politics and his journey to Parliament.
Then Maria King, a cruise ship performer and a classically trained pianist came on stage to entertain.
A newly refurbished plaque was officially unveiled.
It was one of two made from oak from a tree in Windsor Great Park.
The other had been sent to a branch of the South Australia Countrywomen’s Association as a thank you for food parcels sent over during The Second World War.
The evening finished with a rousing rendition of Jerusalem.
A Shenley WI spokesperson said: “For any organisation to be flourishing after 100 years is an achievement. For it to be meeting on the same night of the week and in the same venue is amazing. So Shenley Women’s institute celebrated!”
Shenley WI welcomes women of all ages and meets on the first Thursday in every month (except August) at 7.30pm, in Shenley Village Hall.
