Plans for a new office building to replace the Esso petrol station in Radlett have been approved by Hertsmere Borough Council (HBC), despite protests from the Aldenham Parish Council.
The petrol station and Regency House on Watling Street will be knocked down so the new office can be built.
HBC’s planning committee was unsure on the application when they debated it on Thursday, October 11, but the meeting was halted when head of planning Christine Lyons said they needed to take legal advice.
The following Monday, however, HBC decided to pass the plans, despite the parish council’s objections.
Parish Council chairman, Vivienne Charrett, said the parish council was “disappointed” by the decision.
She said: “Whatever argument we tried to put forward was closed down.
“It was a very difficult meeting. It isn’t a happy situation… they took absolutely no notice of anything we said.”
Councillors John Graham and Seamus Quilty were commended by the parish council for their part in the debate – the former described the office, which would be three and four storeys tall, as “too big for the area”, while Cllr Quilty said it would be more suitable in an inner city than Radlett.
Initial plans to convert the petrol station and Regency House were rejected by the council last year.
