Kings Langley Parish Council has been looking at ways to improve accessibility around the canal.
For over 200 years the Grand Union Canal has run through Kings Langley and provided one of the three transport methods though the village. Over time the railways and then the car reduced the viability of the canal and so its towpath has deteriorated into a poor state that, in some places, is now unsuitable for the increasing numbers of walkers and cyclists that are keen to use the towpath for leisure and to get to work.
These days, Kings Langley is very full of cars, so the parish council has been looking at ways to improve the local transport situation.
A parish council spokesperson said: “We commissioned a report from Sustrans, the cycling and sustainable transport charity, to look at ways to encourage people to use their cars less for local journeys. One of their key recommendations is to upgrade the quality of the towpath and increase the number of access points to the canal. For example, the upgraded towpath would provide a great way of getting to the Kings Langley and Apsley stations without using the roads.
“We are now seeking to source funding to make the necessary improvements and it will really help our case if residents could email us with their thoughts on how they would use the canal more if the towpath is upgraded to a similar standard as the recently restored section from Water Lane northwards.”
