Nelson Mandela 1918-2013

Local community figures have been paying tribute to former South African president Nelson Mandela who died on Thursday evening. Hemel Hempstead MP Mike Penning listened to Mr Mandela address the Houses of Parliament in Westminster Hall. He said: “Nelson Mandela was a larger-than-life character who overcame unbelievable odds to bring equal rights to his country. His courage, determination and humility inspired the whole world. He was one of the great heroes of the twentieth century and an inspiration to a generation. “I will never forget when, as a newly-appointed member of the House of Commons press lobby, I listened to him address the Houses of Parliament in Westminster Hall. His presence filled that huge space and the atmosphere was electric. It was one of the most memorable moments of my life. “His legacy is a democratic South Africa that, although not without its problems, is in a much better place than it was before. “A truly great man, whose whole life was dedicated to his country.” Would you like to pay tribute to Nelson Mandela?
