The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, issued his first ‘very high’ air pollution alert last month after air quality levels reached more than double the legal limit in Central and Greater London. Although levels in Pinner are amongst the lowest in Greater London, there is still a cause for concern. Even though the borough average is moderate or low, conditions next to busy roads may still be high or very high. Responding to his decision, Mayor Khan said: “The shameful state of London’s toxic air had meant that I was forced to trigger the first ‘very high’ air pollution alert under my new comprehensive alert system. “This is the highest level of alert and everyone – from the most vulnerable to the physically fit – may need to take precautions to protect themselves from the filthy air. “Safeguarding the health of Londoners from pollution is my number one priority.” Cold, calm and settled weather caused the high alert. Low wind speeds led to poor dispersal of local pollutants meaning pollution built throughout the course of several days. Have your say: do you think air pollution is bad in Pinner?
