Herts Police have confirmed that the force kept an 82-year-old pensioner from Croxley overnight in a police cell before releasing him with no charge.
Officers were called to New Road, Croxley, on May 30 after a man reportedly in possession of a bladed article threatened a victim verbally and with a knife.
A spokesperson for Herts Police said: “Officers attended the scene at an address in New Road, Croxley Green, and one drew their taser device. This is normal protocol in these situations based on the information that had been passed to them, which was that a suspect was armed with a knife.
“We can confirm that the officer did not fully activate the taser device, as the situation diffused. He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of being in possession of a bladed article in a public place, common assault, and criminal damage.
He was then taken to police custody and released without charge the following day.”
A few days after the incident, a local newspaper suggested that the arrestee in question was an 82-year-old man. The pensioner in question was reportedly given no opportunity to tell his side of the story before being locked up for the night.
Herts Police have confirmed the age of the resident in question.
