A Kings Langley teenager returned from the Commonwealth Games and European Championships with a haul of five medals.

Talented gymnast Ondine Achampong, 18, claimed silver medals in women’s all-around and women’s floor exercise, as well as being part of the team that won the artistic gymnastics gold at the Commonwealth Games, which took place from July 28 to August 8.

She also won a team silver medal and an individual silver medal in the women’s balance beam at the European Championships, which took place in Munich from August 11-21.

Ondine said: “I’m just in shock. I really can’t believe it. I didn’t come into this final with any particular goals; I just wanted to keep doing what I do in the gym and feel like I’m getting more and more used to dealing with the big moments like today.

“To have competed in the Commonwealth Games and then the European Championships has been a huge step up for me and to have won medals at both feels really special. I’m very proud or myself and the whole team.”

Ondine, together with Alice Kinsella, Georgia-Mae Fenton, Jennifer Gadirova and Jessica Gadirova, won team silver at the European Championships. This achievement is a tie with the British women’s team’s highest result in the European Championships. Italy took the gold and the team from Germany took home the bronze.

At the Commonwealth Games, the team of Ondine, Alice Kinsella, Kelly Simm, Georgia-Mae Fenton and Claudia Fragapane came out of the final with a total of 161.100, finishing more than 3.000 marks ahead of Australia in second place. The team from Wales claimed bronze.

Ondine added: “It’s been so amazing. As a gymnast, I looked up to the girls I’m competing with so much, so to be on a team with them has been so cool.”
