The beloved Café on the Common celebrated its second birthday in January and has reflected on its role in the Chorleywood community.
The café is a community space run by Mission EmployAble. Its purpose is to serve residents and visitors, whilst also offering internship opportunities for young people with learning disabilities.
Katharine Weston, founder and chair of Mission EmployAble, said: “When Café on the Common first opened its doors, no one quite knew what to expect from a café that was inside a cricket club and was partly staffed by young adults with learning disabilities and which welcomed dogs.
“Some people didn’t know whether we were brave or mad, but it’s wonderful to say on the café’s second anniversary, our customers continue to tell us how much they enjoy our delicious food and wonderfully welcoming atmosphere.
“Even better, we are proud that our 23 previous interns have achieved over 90 per cent success in paid jobs in hospitality, catering, retail, deliveries, care homes, hotels, cleaning and schools.
“Our 14 current interns are also training for horticulture, warehouse work and kitchen duties.”
