A Garston resident and novelist has reflected on his first book release as he prepares for his second.
Steve Johnson released his first book, The Hidden Road Home, last year, achieving his lifelong dream of publishing a novel.
Reflecting on the release, he told GARSTONnews: “To be honest, the reaction to it has been better than I’d dared to hope. Sales are in four figures with dozens of five-star Amazon reviews. What pleases me most is that the story seems to have struck a chord with both men and women, spanning a wide age group.”
Sadly, Steve’s wife Maggie passed away in May 2023 aged 59, three months before the book was completed. The novel is dedicated to her.
Steve’s second novel, Soul Objective, is due to be released in May or June 2025. Main character Joe is a soul music fan who grows up in Watford in the 1960s and 70s. Readers who know the area will likely recognise several of the places mentioned.
In the book, Joe’s life is ticking along nicely until a revelation on his 21st birthday blows his world apart. He sets out on a quest that takes him from the leafy suburbs of Hertfordshire to the mean streets of New York City and a date with destiny.
Steve said: “By the time Soul Objective comes out, it will be two years since my wife suddenly passed away. The initial shock has subsided but it isn’t something you get over, more something you have to get through.
“My writing has helped by giving me something positive to focus on during a very difficult time.”
