WELCOME: A new Safer Neighbourhood Team Sergeant is on the beat in Watford

Published on: 5th June 2021   |   By: News Bulletin   |   Category: Uncategorized

The Watford Outer Safer Neighbourhood Team has welcomed a new sergeant in post.

Sergeant Andy Blackwood is taking on the mantle from his predecessor, Sergeant Matt Langley, who has taken up a role in Workforce Development based at HQ in Welwyn Garden City.

Andy, who began his role in May, first joined the constabulary in 2002 as a Police Constable based in Watford, after studying public services at West Herts College. In 2005, he transferred to team A in Hemel Hempstead and four years later, he joined the traffic team – now known as the Road Policing Unit – in 2009.

In 2013, he returned to Hemel Hempstead where he studied for his sergeant’s exam. After passing in 2016, he returned to his roots in Watford where he led Intervention Team D up until Saturday 1 May this year, when he joined the Watford Outer Safer Neighbourhood Team.

Sergeant Blackwood, who now leads a team of 14 PCs and PCSOs, said: “I was born and bred in Watford which I think helps enormously because I know the area like the back of my hand. So when a member of the public talks to me about an issue in a particular location, I know exactly where they mean straightaway and we don’t have to waste valuable time ensuring we’re on the same page!

“Community engagement is incredibly important to me, and I know we haven’t been able to hold our regular face-to-face events in the way we did pre-Covid. However now restrictions are lifting I’m looking forward to building on the great work Matt did with the team, and get back out there. We’ll also be setting our new neighbourhood priorities soon, which means we’ll be asking the public what they think we should be focusing on in Watford Outer.

“Several members of my team have also recently undergone social media training and they are looking to post more regularly on the Watford Police Facebook and Twitter pages, so please follow us if you don’t already so you can keep up with the latest crime trends and information.”

Sergeant Blackwood works alongside his colleagues Sergeant Ellie Berry, who leads the Watford Central Safer Neighbourhood Team, and Sergeant Dave Elgy, who leads the Watford North Safer Neighbourhood Team.
