A charity which provides day services and support to adults with physical and/or sensory disabilities in south West Herts celebrated its 20th birthday earlier this week. Malcolm Cracknell, Chair, is a founded member of DRUM and so has been with the charity for 20 years. DRUM is based at Parkgate Youth & Community Centre, Southwold Road, Watford, WD24 7DP Mr Cracknell said: “I’ve been at DRUM for nearly 13 years and enjoy my work more than ever. We have an incredible team here and we are still user-led, so are able to provide a service that our members want and enjoy. It’s hard work but we are constantly trying to improve the service and are now busy securing our future here at Parkgate Community Centre, which is very exciting for us all. “The roof and guttering work is starting soon and DRUM is funding the interior refurbishment ourselves with help from a few friends! We have received some fantastic support from MyNews, LMD Plumbing, Travis Perkins Rickmansworth, CLEMENTS and Décor Tiles which has helped us refurbish the toilets and these will be finished in a couple of weeks. “We have also received a large donation from the Bert and Sarah Hooper Trust and a donation from the Halifax Building Society which will help us install a new kitchen and increase the size of our art room.” “It’s a huge job for DRUM to take on, in addition to all the fundraising that we already have to do but with the help and support from the local community and the dedication of our team we will be able to achieve this. It’s the first real ‘home’ that DRUM has had in twenty years and we want it to be just that, home from home for our members, their carers, our team and the wider community”.
