Water will return to Berkhamsted Castle’s famous moat as a solution to flooding issues on a nearby road.
For several years, heavy rain has led to flooding on Bridgewater Road, adjacent to the castle.
Now, having been granted permission by Historic England, Hertfordshire County Council is working on a solution.
A new filtration system is being constructed in the grass verge at the end of Bridgewater Road in order to channel water into the castle’s outer moat.
A considerable amount of silt in the moat will be removed to provide enough capacity for any run-off water. This will also restore the area back to the original depth of the moat.
Due to the castle’s status as a historical site, the work is being carried out under the supervision of the Museum of London Archaeology and amphibian specialists, in order to ensure that the site’s population of great crested newts will remain undisturbed.
