My Local News spoke with the new High Sheriff of Hertfordshire Nicholas Buxton following his appointment in April.
Born and raised in Hertfordshire, Nicholas lives on a farm near Ware with his wife, where they raised their four sons. He has taken over from Annie Brewster as High Sheriff, a role he will hold until 2026.
As a farmer, Nicholas has promoted more sympathetic farming practices and an extensive restoration of the river Ash. He also supports many local charities, including Hertfordshire Community Foundation and the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance.
Nicholas said: “I’m very aware of previous High Sheriffs’ work, and I have been very impressed with what they have achieved.
“This role brings me into contact with some wonderful charities and gives me the opportunity to meet both leaders and volunteers to celebrate what they are doing.”
Nicholas explained that his chosen theme ‘Nurture through Nature’ aims to encourage people to access nature’s powers. He also hopes to bring awareness to the administration of justice, commenting on the “tremendous pressure that the system is under.”
Since taking to office in April, Nicholas has already been busy making trips to charities such as Sunnyside Rural Trust in Northchurch, Mudlarks Community Garden in Hertford, and The Red Shed in Stevenage, and has visited several police units around the county.
He said: “Speaking now, on a glorious spring day, my message is to go for a walk, access your local parks, and go for a park run. There is tremendous power in connecting with nature, which is something as a society I think we have lost.
“Hertfordshire is such a beautiful county, it has so many things to be proud of, and that is what I want to bring to people’s attention.”
