WALK OFF: Changes to pedestrianisation project in St Albans following consultation

Published on: 27th September 2023   |   By: Panayiota Demosthenous   |   Category: Uncategorized

Trial pedestrianisation projects in St Albans are to change focus this autumn.

The original High Street Recovery Scheme was introduced in 2020 to allow more space for social distancing. Following a consultation, only 33 per cent of respondents supported these measures.

The new plans will see the High Street reopen to traffic as normal, with the gates remaining in place so the space can be closed off for special events. George Street will be closed on Saturdays and Sundays, and vehicles will be restricted on Market Place, Spencer Street and Upper Dagnall Street.

Councillor Phil Bibby, executive member for highways and transport at Hertfordshire County Council, said: “We’ve listened to residents and businesses, and it’s clear that the closures on High Street and George Street aren’t working the way we’d hoped. We’ll continue monitoring traffic, air quality and footfall in the area.”

Councillor Lynn Cunningham, vice-chair of St Albans City & District Council’s Public Realm Committee, said: “It is the right decision to listen to local businesses and visitors to end the trial on the High Street, yet maintain the flexibility to once again close it off to traffic for special events when we can properly make use of the space.”
