‘VERY PROUD’: Hemel-based mother and son duo collaborate on inspiring children’s book

A Hemel Hempstead mother and son duo have produced their very own children’s book, with the hope that it will be the first of many.

Karli New and her son Caledon, nine, began their writing journey after his school teachers suggested he take on a project to improve his concentration and focus.

Speaking to HEMELnews, Karli said: “We go for a milkshake to hash out ideas and pick out the best ones. Most of his ideas are wonderful and we settled on the idea to be about his cute baby brother who loves cars.

“We take the toy cars around with us to different places and make up stories about their adventures. Our own adventure has been an incredible bonding experience for us, filled with laughter!”

Their first novel, Picklepop & the Racing Song, is about a family of cars going on an adventure to the park. As well as being a fun and entertaining story, the novel also helps to teach the reader to count to 10 in a rhyming song, and how to be brave in asking for help.

Karli continued: “I’m so very proud of my son for sticking with it, and he absolutely loves doing it! He’s very arty and busy studying for his 11-plus exams, but he’s such a good boy.

“We have another 10 ideas in the works!”

The duo wanted a young person to contribute to the artwork, so enlisted talented local artist Emma Leather from Oaklands College. Her vibrant illustrations have helped to bring the characters to life on the page.

Karli and Caledon are now looking for a publishing partner to share the story with a wider audience. To get in contact, email Karli at or to find out more, head to @babycaradventures on Instagram.
