‘VERY ENJOYABLE’: Radlett Choir hits the right note as it looks ahead to a busy New Year

Published on: 8th January 2026   |   By: Naomi Greenaway   |   Category: Uncategorized

You could say Radlett Choir is starting the New Year on a ‘high note’, as the long-established group prepares for a full programme of performances and community events throughout 2026.

The choir, which traces its origins back more than 70 years, has been a fixture of the local musical scene since it was founded by Peter Freeman, organist at Radlett Congregational Church.

Under a succession of musical directors, including Ewart Hopkins, whose 22-year tenure saw international exchanges with choirs in the Netherlands, France and Germany, the choir has built a reputation for ambitious programming and collaborative performances.

One huge achievement was made for the Choir last month as they joined more than 100 singers from Aeolian Singers, Hardynge Choir and St Albans Chamber Choir for the St Cecilia Festival Concert at St Albans Cathedral.

Supported by over 50 musicians from the St Albans Symphony Orchestra, the event brought together performers from across the district.

Speaking to RADLETTnews, a spokesperson for The Radlett Choir said: “It was a wonderful occasion in St Albans Cathedral with over one hundred singers from several choirs.

“The atmosphere was professional but also relaxed and very enjoyable. The conductor, Bill Carslake, St Albans Symphony Orchestra Artistic Director, was an outstanding leader for the event, providing inspiration and encouragement for all the performers.”

As a member of the St Cecilia Festival Society, the choir regularly takes part in the St Albans St Cecilia Festival Society, which is traditionally held every two years, with the next large-scale event expected in 2028.

Looking ahead to the new year, the Radlett Choir has confirmed their key dates for 2026, with the first event being hosted on Saturday, March 21, at the Vision Hall in Radlett and the others following throughout the year.

Asked what their New Year’s goals were, Radlett Choir said: “We wish to continue to sing together under the expert eye of our Musical Director, Alexander Flood, to make great music for our audiences.

“In addition, we are very keen to attract new members, so we offer four free rehearsals so that potential members can try us out.”

Rehearsals take place on Tuesday evenings weekly at the United Free Church, Station Road, Radlett, and new members are all welcome.
