It began with one name, then a second, then a third. As the BBC announced the winners of the BBC Young Composer Competition, the story of a Bushey school emerged.
Across all three age categories, every top prize went to a student from The Purcell School. Gerard, a Year 13 student, won the senior category. Nemunis, a Year 12 student, claimed the upper junior category, and Luca, a Year 10 student, took first place in the lower junior category. Tim, a Year 13 student, received a Highly Commended award.
Each winner will undertake a bespoke program, working with a mentor composer on a project with the BBC Concert Orchestra, culminating in a performance or broadcast.
Gerard said: “I am beyond thrilled and incredibly excited to be one of the winners in my category this year!”
Nemunis said: “Winning BBC Young Composer is a unique lifetime experience. My winning piece was a response to one of my revered composers, the Argentinian Alberto Ginastera.”
This achievement comes as head of composition Alison Cox prepares to retire after 38 years. She helped establish the original BBC Proms/Guardian Young Composer of the Year Competition in 1998.
