TWO DECADES: Founder of martial arts academy reflects on 20 years in Tring

Published on: 22nd March 2025   |   By: The Newsdesk   |   Category: Uncategorized

This month, TRINGnews spoke to Shihan Chris from Tring Martial Arts Academy (TMAA) on the 20th anniversary of the club’s founding.

Chris said: “I started TMAA in July 2005 with one simple goal – to share my passion for martial arts with the local community. For me, martial arts is not just a vocation; it’s a way of life.

“Reaching this 20-year milestone feels absolutely incredible, and in many ways, I can hardly believe it. I never imagined it would grow into the thriving community it is today.”

The club began with classes just once a week, but its popularity grew. TMAA moved locations across the town before settling in full-time premises at the Silk Mill Business Park in Tring. By 2010, Chris had made the “calculated risk” to leave his job and teach martial arts full time.

He continued: “Over the years, my team of instructors and I have experienced countless rewarding moments – too many to list! But what I feel most grateful for is seeing students walk through our doors, develop their skills, build confidence, and achieve their black belts.

“More than anything, I appreciate the students, families and instructors who have helped shape the academy into what it is today. Celebrating 20 years is a huge milestone and a testament to the incredible community we have built together.”

Chris recalled some of the challenges he has faced over the years, including “economic downturns, ever-rising rental and utility costs, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the day-to-day logistics of managing a busy school”.

TMAA will be hosting a special anniversary event on Saturday, July 5, with alumni black belts, current members, fellow school owners and local dignitaries. The details are yet to be confirmed.
