Family members and friends of Dave Edwards, Croxley Green’s Mr Christmas, defied atrocious weather conditions last night to turn on the annual Christmas light display.

Mr Christmas, who sadly on Friday, had been battling cancer and his daughter Sharon Markham spoke fondly of her father before she lit up the impressive display.

Mr Christmas, who has been decorating his house since 1973, raised tens of thousands of pounds for charity.

The event was also live streamed.

Sharon said: “As you know, Mr Christmas went to heaven last night so this is not easy for me. Dad would have been so thrilled to see your messages and tributes. The Christmas tree that you have decorated in his honour is breathtaking. It has been an honour being part of the Christmas family and this wonderful community.

“Dad you are not only the Hertfordshire hero but you are my hero and tonight is all about you.”

Social media was also flooded with tributes to Mr Christmas. Hannah Crick was among those to share her memories.

She said: “It is such a sad loss to all that knew him. We will certainly miss the lights and a big hug goes to his friends and family through this difficult time. It’s a huge loss to Croxley.”

Proceeds from this year’s display will go to Peace Hospice Care and other smaller charities.
