Three people have been sentenced in connection with throwing items into The Mount Prison, Bovingdon. The two men and one woman appeared before St Albans Court on Wednesday, July 23rd, for sentence having pleaded guilty at earlier hearings of the following offences:

  • Luke Giugno, who is 26 years old and from Farley Hill Road in Luton, was sentenced to a total of 18 months in prison for conspiracy to bring prohibited articles into a prison, attempting to supply class B drugs and possessing a class A drug (cocaine)
  • Mark Oliver, who is 34 years old and from Chesham Road in Bovingdon was sentenced to eight months in prison for conspiracy to bring prohibited articles into a prison
  • Zoe Oliver was given a six month prison term, which is suspended for two year for conspiracy to bring prohibited articles into a prison and must refrain from visiting anyone in a UK prison for two years.

The court heard that the investigation centred around Mark Oliver, who was a serving prisoner at The Mount. He had conspired with his partner Zoe and Luke Giugno to get mobile phones and drugs into the prison. Luke was arrested at the boundary of The Mount on July 23rd, 2013 following a proactive operation. He had thrown a package containing 11 mobile phones and a quantity of drugs into the trees nearby, these were recovered along with other drugs located in a car nearby. Detective Inspector Ian Butler is in charge of the Rapid Action, Intervention and Disruption team, who carried out proactive patrols to target those involved in these actions said: “This is an extremely positive result in the courts and I hope this serves as a warning to others both in prison and on the outside that we will proactively target you through intelligence to make arrests. “We do work closely with the prison and other agencies and will continue to do so to prevent and disrupt any prohibited items reaching prisoners.”
